Demobilize

If your husband has been to war

If your husband is a veteran and

If your husband is easily startled

By loud noises or cars backfiring

Because they sound like bombs

Or by your hand on his shoulder

Or even the sound of your voice saying come here or come back

If your husband cries out at night

Names you do not know comrades he has lost and cities he has found without you

If your husband still has a gun

And if your husband gets confused

Thinking the bathroom is a desert the pool a trench the underside of a bed safety

If your husband sits and stares off

If your husband has eyes that die off

You can go.  You can demobilize

And go to the place in your mind where you make stories

Where you can rewrite this to be better.

You can.  You can retreat.
